Goodbye StormGuy.com

This is a farewell to StormGuy.com. For whatever reason, Dave has let it expired and it will be missed. Thanks for the forums and all of the excellent pictures and videos and one of the best DVDs out there for storm chasers. Hopefully one day it will come back, but until then, I'm going to try to get a forum setup for us chasers in Oklahoma and get my video and photo galleries up and squared away.

Really, really, cold.

Do I need to say anything?

2/16/06 into the weekend - Winter Weather

It looks like winter is back and may bring more than just cold temperatures this time. This weekend, beginning Thurs night, looks to be forecasted with snow, sleet and ice. I work the streets Friday night, so it'll be interesting to see what's going to happen around T-town, because if winter weather does hit and any sort of precipitation stays on the roads, it will cause havoc among the many "skilled" drivers around town. I'm really interested to see if we get as much as the forecasts hint. With the ground as dry as it is, I don't think it will have any problem cooling down rapidly enough to keep some precip around during the weekend, but with almost 80 degree temperatures on Thurs, it will have a lot of cooling to do, although it's supposed to drop almost 55 degrees between Thurs and Thurs night. That's just plain nuts, a 55 degree drop over a few hours! Make sure to keep a coat in your car.

The Future of Radar Software?

May 4, 1999

GrLevelX, a radar software package that is becoming more popular amoung the storm chaser community because of it's various features (including 'smoothing'), cheap price, free limited updates and other features, has announced a new edition called GrLevel2 Analyst Edition. One of the cool features of this new edition is the display of 4D radar data (length, width, height, and time). This will allow the viewing of a radar image with a 3D image of the radar display which can be animated. This looks to be a promising advancement, as it will allow users to actually see the structure of the storm they are chasing/watching. Although there are many questions about how much this software will cost and what will be needed to run it, I can easily see it eventually becomming the standard for chasers. Stay tuned to GrLevelX for more information on this product.

Cold air to return, still dry

For Tulsa:

Looks like winter has shown it's face again... as it should, it's freaking February! We've had more than a mild winter so far with very few nights in the 20's, but now it looks to be getting on track. With a La Nina currently active, conditions across the southern US are drier than normal. With a burn ban still in effect in Oklahoma since Nov of 2005, conditions aren't looking to improve much over the next few months. This means more work for our firefighters, especially in smaller towns. We drove up to Oklahoma City this past weekend and I must of have seen at least a dozen areas along the highway where someone probably tossed a cigarette out and started a small grass fire. Also on our way back, we could see two very large fires with smoke plumes stretching for miles downwind.

Skywarn Spotter Training - Feb 11, 2006

SKYWARN SPOTTER TRAINING
Feb. 11, 2006 - 0900 to 1600
Tulsa Technology Center (Riverside) - Jenks, OK

The annual SKYWARN Spotter Training will be held again this year at the Tulsa Technology Center Riverside Campus in Jenks, OK located at Jones Jr. Airport. It will include talks with personnel from the NWS, OK/ARK SKYWARN, and others. It is an excellent session for beginners and experienced chasers alike. This talk usually deals with more advanced spotting and weather issues and not just the typical "This is what a funnel cloud looks like," although that is usually covered briefly. If you get the chance to attend, this is an excellent place to meet fellow chasers/spotters. Steve Miller has the schedule posted on his blog.
